THE GERONIMO PARALLEL
I was upset when I heard that the troops on the ground had given bin Laden a code name rich in American symbolism;
GERONIMO,
To the SEALS, this hunt must have seemed like a replay of the genocidal Indian wars.
Does anyone remember the movie Hollywood made about this American legend?
Wikipedia: The movie follows the events leading up to the capture of Geronimo in 1886. The Apache Indians have reluctantly agreed to settle on a US Government approved reservation. Not all the Apaches are able to adapt to the life of corn farmers, and one in particular, Geronimo, is restless. Pushed over the edge by broken promises and unnecessary actions by the government, Geronimo and thirty other warriors form an attack team which humiliates the government by evading capture, while reclaiming what is rightfully theirs.
Is that the association we want the world to make about bin Laden? Isn’t it a tad
inappropriate? Any comments from Native Americans?
